I have very little duplicate pets and majority of strategies for this fight uses multiple of the same pet, so i decided to make my own. I tested this one around 15 times and lost only once with majority going like in the scenario below. Sometimes you need an extra jab for Faceripper, but usually your Crazy Carrot can handle an extra blow. If not, don't discourage yourself and stick with the script as there is a fair chance that you will win anyway. I'm not sure if breeds matter but i used PB Droplet of Y'Shaarj and SB Autumnal Sproutling. No or very little RNG with this setup and the fight itself is actually pretty fast.

Since this strat doesn't need a third pet, I'm sure you could find a replacement easily. Maybe Happiness with Void Portal after Darkness swapping to a P/P Autumnal.

As for Nightshade Sproutling being in so many strats, it does provide a nasty 1-2 punch with Call Darkness and Fist of the forest.
Like Gráinne said, there is some leeway with the strategy with the 3rd slot open and the 1st pet doing so much work. I do understand your frustrations as many come to Xu-Fu for fast, reliable strats where one doesn't have to spend all of their gold for a niche pet or look through / try 37 strats to get to one they can use.

Working out the math:
Without crits, 1026 damage is needed from Nightshade Sproutling's Call Darkness. (The non-crit damage from Echo of the Cave's Face Punch is fixed at 658 on Faceripper)
Your S/B Nightshade Sproutling is one of the recommended breeds.
Damage = (Ability Power + (Ability Power/20) * Pet Power)
S/B = 273 attack
Call Darkness = 45 ability power
damage = (45 + (45/20) * 273)
727.5 damage, rounded down =
727 damage, this ability gets a 50% buff against dragons.
727 + 50% damage =
1091 damage.
It is mathematically impossible for Faceripper not to die to Face Punch on Turn 8 (using a balance or 'better' breed).
As for my script being broken causing Faceripper not to die on Turn 8, I am trying and trying to figure out where it is wrong without success finding the failure XD. I have made more than enough mistakes to know that the problem may lie with the script.

The math was indeed incorrect:
My notes have 45/20 as 2.5, instead of 2.25.
The math works out to 988.875, rounded down to 988.
